BACKGROUND

Once known as Paris of the East, Lebanon in its diverse and sophisticated nature proved itself to be unique from the rest of the Middle East from art to fashion; where unity, tradition and modernity flourished. Lebanon had a flourishing economy and great financial reputation, hence compared to Switzerland. Lebanon is quoted to be, “More than a country. It is a message of freedom and an example of pluralism for East and West” (Pope John Paul II). Lebanon is a message of unity and a model of coexistence between Muslims and Christians.
This little country which holds so much value has been affected by turmoil since the beginning of time, as far back as 332BC. Lebanon has experienced civil wars, religious conflicts, refugee and trash crises, and a deteriorating, corrupt government. This country that has handled so much has pushed through devastation and rebuilt its life more than any country merits and still hasn’t gotten close to what any country deserves. After decades of turmoil, Lebanon is left with an extremely corrupt government, economic and environmental crisis, millions of expats, and a concerning refugee crisis.

THE LATEST DEVASTATION

In Beirut, Lebanon on August 4, 2020, at about 6:00pm, a giant explosion rocked the whole country. One of the biggest non-nuclear explosions killed over 100 people, injured over 5,000, while leaving 100s missing. The massive mushroom cloud of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate was seen from kilometers away, felt all the way in Cyprus, and in the farthest mountains of Lebanon. The blast destroyed a huge part of the city, demolishing it in a radius of several miles, while throwing victims into the sea where rescue team tried to recover them.

The country is already suffering with the worst geopolitical and economic crises, famine, drastic increase in unemployment, and a pandemic. This tragedy will be another cross to bear on the shoulders of every Lebanese individual. Homes are shattered and it will take a lot from the Lebanese people to come back from this tragedy. This sacred paradise of a country is led by corrupt politicians and surrounded by countries that have attacked and threatened them.

Lebanon is a blessing from God and our hope for the future is that the world will see it in the same light.
